Cahrma Dahneke - 2017

My name is Cahrma Dahneke, Im 18 years old, and ever since I was young I was always intrigued by special needs. Although I never took it too seriously, once I was a senior it became apparent to me that I wanted to teach special needs kids when I was older. I decided to attend Johnson & Wales University because it was a small school, it had smaller sized classes rather than large lecture, and it had a homey feel to it. My school is about 10 minutes outside of downtown Denver, Colorado, and my favorite pat - its all brick buildings! I love the feel of this school and cant wait to attend in the fall. I am majoring in Psychology, and then returning to California to finish up and become a special education teacher. My biggest goal is to become a teacher and to help change the lives of countless young kids. I would prefer to teach either middle school or high school kids. My senior year in high school, I redid, and revamped the elevators for the handicapped kids at my school. This included lighting, flooring, broken doors, painting, and mechanical issues. I ended up putting the handprints of every student enrolled in the special needs department on the inside foyer to give them a chance to truly be a part of the school. I cant wait to achieve my dreams and become a teacher, and learn countless things along the way!
Blake Yokom - 2017

I want to thank you so much for your support in helping me pursue my passion in College as a Fire Fighter/EMT. I was accepted at Butte college Fire Academy starting this July, 2017 to December 2017. After the Academy I would be pursuing my Fire Science Degree and Agricultural Degree. I could not do this without your support. I am extremely thankful to be receiving this scholarship to help me with costs of attending college. I am one of six children, the fifth one to graduate from Nevada Union High school and attend college. So you can imagine the cost for my parents. It is extremely important to our family that we all work hard and attend college to further our education.

First of all I would like to say that it is an honor for me to be the recipient of this scholarship. I will be attending the University of Washington next fall, and will be pursuing a degree in Engineering. I don't know if you knew this but I actually played football with your son. It was our Jr. Midget year and I can perfectly remember how he always mad me laugh, I also remember his biright white cleats, but most important I rember his face perfectly. Thank you for allowing me to represent your name. I won't have this scholarship be a waste. Once, again, thank you for your support. ~Juan Espinosa

Melodie Lynn:

Ever since I was a very small girl I have had a dream of becoming a marine mammal trainer. In order to do that I have come up with a plan to get me there. I am going to go to Sierra College for two years to get my required courses done and transfer over to UC Davis for two more years to major in Biology and minor in either Zoology or Animal Science. After I have received my Bachelors Degree, I hope to attend the program for the training of large exotic mammals at Moorpark College in Ventura County for just one year, this is where I will get my experience as an actual trainer (I believe this will be the most fun part of my journey). So in several years look for me in the dolphin show at Discovery Kingdom!

2011 Update:

Since graduation at Nevada Union, I have stuck to my plan and have just graduated with an A.S. degree in Natural Sciences from Sierra College. I left with a GPA of 4.0 for the spring semester and a total GPA of 3.57. My road is still a long one, but I know I will enjoy every moment. I am excited to start the next chapter in my life at CSU Monterey Bay where I intend to graduate with a B.S. in Marine and Coastal Ecology. While I'm there, I hope to intern at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and gain more experience so my dream of swimming with the dolphins will become a reality.

Jenna Wirkner:

Currently I am an Agriculture Education/Animal Science Major at Butte Community College. I just finished up my freshman year and am excited for my fall semester to start up in August. I kept busy throughout the year with the Butte College Ag Ambassadors and the Butte County Young Farmers and Ranchers. I attended the National Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference, which happen to be held right here in the Agriculture State California. I was fortunate enough to meet Ag friends from all across the United States, and meet many new friends. After Butte, I plan on attending either Chico State or Fresno State.

2010 Update:

I am currently finishing up my second year at Butte Community College, still working on my degree in Agriculture Education. I am looking forward to transfering to CSU Chico in Fall of 2011. I have enjoyed this past year in school being involved in Butte College Ag Ambassadors and being the Vice Chair for the Butte County Young Farmers and Ranchers.

Jenna DeVere:

Currently I am nursing student attending University of San Francisco. I am going into my third year and continue to love and be excited about becoming a nurse. This past semester I have been working at California Pacific Medical Center one day a week for my clinical and next semester I am signed up to be at Stanford. I went into nursing school with the thought that I wanted to work in Labor and Delivery or become a midwife. As of now, that still interests me, but I still have a couple more years to help make that decision!

2010 Update:

I am finishing my junior year in nursing school. Three years down and one more to go! This semester focused on pediatrics and maternity. I got to work with kids of all ages and with  a lot of terrible diseases and then with laboring moms bringing new life into the world! This semester showed me that I don't think I have the heart to work with sick kids(emotionally I don't think I could handle it!), but it got me excited about going into the field of maternity when I graduate. I really love this area of nursing; it is such an exciting thing to be a part of and I thoroughly enjoyed all my clinical time! I also just started working as a Nursing Assistant at the Veteran Hospital in San Francisco. It is fun hanging out with all the veterans and its a nice way to keep me busy and to do something productive. I am planning to stay in San Francisco this summer (my first summer away from Penn Valley, sad) and work.

2011:

I graduated from the University of San Francisco this May with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I am so excited and relieved to have completed my four years of college. Coming to the end of my time in school I look back and so appreciate all the help and support that so many people have given me over the years. I couldn't have gotten through it all without this support, going all the way back to the scholarship I received for the Newman Memorial. I am planning on going into Maternity Nursing and am currently looking for jobs throughout California and Nevada. I am also getting married in the Fall and excited about everything this year has to offer!

{2007}

Emily Ryan:

I graduated a Valedictorian from Nevada Union High School in 2007. I am currently studying Biology at the University of California, San Diego with the intentions of continuing on to Medical School to become an Emergency Room Physician.

2010 Update:

I am currently finishing up my third year at UCSD, still working on the road toward medical school. Along with studying Biology, I have extended my studies to minor work in Spanish Literature as well as Psychology. Just this year I have become a member of the UCSD Club Basketball team and I am continuing to experience the many aspects that UC San Diego has to offer!!!

2011 Update:

I have just finished up my 4th year at UC San Diego but will be taking a 5th year to complete my undergraduate work. This year has brought on many changes! Based on my experiences this past Winter abroad as well as the courses and professors I have encountered this year I have realized that I would be better served in another healthcare profession. Instead of Medical School, I have decided to pursue a career in nursing with a focus on Public Health. At this point, I am researching various schools to apply to in the Fall! My hope is that I will remain in California, ideally closer to home!  :) I am excited about these changes and am really looking forward to what is in store for me!
